ESA WAC 2nd Living Lab Workshop, CUFAA, Rome

The consortium organised the project’s 2nd Living Lab, which was a stakeholder Workshop in Rome on 30 September 2025; the Italian Carabinieri Comando unità forestali, ambientali e agroalimentari (CUFAA) in charge of verifying submissions for the Italian Competent National Authority (CNA)kindly hosted the Workshop at their premises . Around 70 participants were able to join the meeting included nine CNAs from member states, as well as representatives from EFI, FAO, JRC, IFAD.

The event focused on presenting the technical work undertaken in Phase 1 of the project-which presented the selected high performance commodity mapping models, and a demonstration how these could be used for the first level of verification of Due Diligence Statements (DDS) by the CNAs. Additionally, the CNAs provided an update on their status and main challenges they still face with verifications. For the final prototype it was discussed and emphasized that the project needs to connect the different components: commodity mapping, the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem (CDSE), and deforestation mapping, into a coherent system. By combining these elements, potentially a traffic light system can be provided with clear and actionable risk estimations. An important aspect will be the convergence of evidence, since assessments of deforestation can have high levels of uncertainties from global and even national datasets. Several CNAs expressed interest in holding dedicated meetings to co-develop the solution together with the project team. It also paved the way for additional CNAs to be involved in shaping the project’s outcomes. The Workshop highlighted the continued excellent collaboration with the CNAs, reinforcing the project’s shared commitment to supporting EUDR through cutting-edge Earth Observation technologies.
